Some 14 years ago, H. Fröhlich (1968, 1980) predicted that living cells would be able to channel their chemical energies into high frequency electrical and cooperative oscillations. There is now increasing evidence that such electrical oscillations do occur. In particular, Fröhlich predicted that there would be a very high frequency oscillation in the frequency range of 100 gigahertz, but left open the possibility that electrical oscillations of a large scale and of a cooperative nature at yet lower frequency ranges could be observed. The evidence for the very high frequency range oscillations has been admirably summarized by Fröhlich (1980). More recent evidence from laser Raman spectroscopy (Webb, 1980) indicates that living cells, when metabolically active, do indeed produce oscillations at the very high frequency range. Del Guidice, Doglia, & Milani (1982) have suggested that the Fröhlich mechanism is augmented by solitons (Davydov, 1980) to assist in the production of low frequency oscillations.
