Objective: To evaluate the effect of mental factors on tumors in therapeutics relying mainly on Qigong.
Methods: The study was carried out in 140 subjects according to the double-blind principle. The subjects were divided into two groups: control group (54 males and 26 females, 50.39±10.29 years, receiving 11.30±3.81-year education, all in good health from cadre senior center), and tumor group (42 males and 18 females, 49.80±10.97 years, receiving 11.50±3.66-year education, all came from the inpatients with the diagnosis of the middle or late stage of the cancer).
The subjects in the tumor group exercised self-controlled Qigong once per day, assisted with medicine treatment according to the symptom. The subjects of the control group received psychological testing once, while the others received testing prior to practicing Qigong and after three months of exercise. In addition, the evaluation of therapeutic efficacy and the level of Qigong skill was also performed on the tumor patients.
The psychological test includes seven parts: the speed of mental arithmetic; numerical sign; movement reaction; counting; the width of double-digit; the performing ability of tracking; and the recognition of meaningless graph.
Results:
1.The tumor group showed significant differences from control group in six mental indexes: the mistaken amount of the numerical sign(x6) and the standard deviation of the counting(x10), which two indexes reflect the character of the attention, the standard deviation of the movement reaction(x8), the error of the performing ability of tracking by right hand (x14) and the variance of the performing ability of tracking by both hands respectively (x15, x16), which four indexes reflect the character of quickness and coordinate of the body.
x6, x14, x16 show significant difference between tumor group and the control group(p<0.01)
x8, x10, x15 show difference between tumor group and the control group(p<0.05)
2. There was a correlation between the effect of Qigong and mental indexes. The regression equation was that:

y= 5.775 - 0.246x1 - 0.154x3 + 0.169x5 + 0.052x6 - 0.996x7 - 0.148x10-0.0025x13 + 0.0015x14 + 0.00044x15 - 0.605x18

Where:
x1: velocity of mental arithmetic,
x3:the mistaken amount of the mental arithmetic,
x5: the standard deviation of numerical sign,
x6: the mistaken amount of the numerical sign
x7 the mean value of movement reaction,
x10: the standard deviation of the counting
x13: the error of the performing ability of tracking by left hand, x14: the error of the performing ability of tracking by right hand
x15: the variance of the performing ability of tracking by left hand
x18: the mistaken amount of the re-identifications

The multiple correlation index value was 0.63, S.D=1.13 Y > 3.5 tended to predict good prognosis; Y <= 2.5 tended to predict bad prognosis. And take the subjects as validation, the accurate rates of good prognosis was 73%, the accurate rates of bad prognosis was 83%.

Conclusion: The psychological role in Qigong cannot be ignored. Patients can be predicted prognosis and effect of therapy according to mental condition.
