Objective: Study on plasma neuropeptide Y of type 2 diabetes mellitus with geriatric obesity to investigate the effects of Tai Chi exercise on neuroendocrine system.
Methods: Using self-control methods, 16 females with average body mass index 26.8±1.7 kg/m2 are selected as subjects. The subjects were 60-70 years old, and they had suffered from diabetes for over 2 years.
16 type 2 diabetes mellitus with geriatric obesity were divided into two groups voluntarily. One was Tai Chi exercise group, 10 subjects; the other was control group, 6 subjects.
All the subjects were scheduled to do everyday exercise for 3 months. Subjects of Tai Chi exercise group did 24-style-simplification shadowboxing for an hour every day. The other group do walking, running and so on at will everyday.
The results of plasma NPY, glucose and weight index before and after three months’ exercises were tested.
Paired samples T Test was adopted to analyze the data.
Result: Glucose and weight results of Tai Chi exercise group decreased obviously (p<0.05), but as to plasma NPY there are only 6 subjects who were found having high triglycerides decreased obviously (p<0.05), the other 4 subjects who were found having high cholesterol increased obviously (p<0.05). The results of the control group showed no significant difference (p>0.05).
Conclusion: The effects of Tai Chi exercise to plasma NPY on type 2 diabetes mellitus show that Tai Chi exercise help to regulate metabolic disorder of type 2 diabetes mellitus with geriatric obesity by regulating nervous-endocrine system in the body.
