One hundred and nineteen patients were randomized to one of four groups: biofeedback/relaxation training; exercise training; a combination treatment; or an education/attention control program (control group). All three treatment groups showed improvements in function relative to the control condition. All treatment groups showed a significant difference from the control group on tender point index scores due to a modest deterioration by the control group. The exercise and combination groups also showed modest improvements on a physical activity measure. Benefits over a 2-year period were best maintained by the combination group.
