Diseases start from energetic disturbance of the body. Once the body is no longer be able to compensate the energy imbalance, structural disturbance (biochemical and histological) occurs. (1,2) Diseases on energetic disturbance stage usually cannot be detected with conventional Western techniques, which mainly focus on structural disturbance. With modern technology minute changes of blood chemicals can be easily detected, while tumors can be found in their very early stage as well. However, there is still no reliable technique for physical detection of energetic disturbance of the body. Acupuncture and meridian theory provided an initial model of energy distribution inside the body. One of the physical evidences supporting meridian theory is from the study on skin conductivity around acupuncture points along meridians. Based on his study of skin resistance, Voll proposed eight extra meridians in addition to the twelve classical Chinese meridians. The new system is called Electroacupuncture According to Voll (EAV) (3). EAV device measures the changes in skin conductivity on acupuncture point, which reflects energetic disturbance of the meridian. Recently computerized EAV machine has been developed. The new technology is called Electrodermal Screening (EDS), which has brought EAV into a new level. In this study 100 EDS testing results were analyzed and studied with the patient's clinical symptoms.Meridian balance measurements from EDS were shown correlated with clinical measurements using Allergy Symptom Severity Index (ASSI)(4). Sensitivity measurements from EDS were also analyzed and the results implied autoimmune response in many clinical conditions. Clinical applications of EDS were also discussed, which includes meridian balance, remedy testing, sensitivity testing and information inquiry. (5). Conclusion: 1. EDS is a promising technique to evaluate energetic disturbance. 2. Sensitivity testing of internal organs and systems clearly indicates energy conflicts, which implies autoimmune response in some conditions. 3. The EDS technology deserves more research in the future.
