Under the guidance of Chinese and western medical theories, the study was designed to observe the effects of Qigong practice on anti oxidation and aging-retardation, on the basis of previous studies.

The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSE-Px), the serum concentration of lipid peroxide(LPO) as well as 12-item clinical aging symptoms were measured in elderly and pre-elderly hypertensive patients.

The result showed:
After six months of qigong practice (n=30), clinical symptom alleviated significantly; the activity of SOD and GSH-Px increased (P<O.OO1; P<O.06); the serum LPO level decreased a bit. All parameters were compared between the qigong group who have practiced qigong for more than three years and the control group who have never practiced qigong.

We found that the activity of SOD and GSH-Px in the qigong group were higher than that in the control group, the LPO level and the mean total clinical symptom credit were significantly lower than that in the control group. The results suggested that Qigong practice is helpful to improve the ability of anti-oxidation of body and slow the process of aging.
