Information is the medium for mutual communications among component parts of a human body system (abbreviated as HBS) and is also the medium for mutual communications between a HBS and its external surroundings. That the transmission, conversion and processing of information conduct normally is absolutely necessary for the HBS to function normally. If the internal information of a HBS is in disorder or incomplete, or some communication channel in a HBS is blocked, then the normal regulating and controlling functions of the HBS will be impaired and various kinds of diseases may occur. According to the viewpoints of information theory, why the practice of qigong can cure diseases is that in the process of practising qigong the disordered information is rectified and the blocked communication channel is dredged rectified and the blocked communication channel is dredged by relaxing fully and quieting deeply the human body, or the incomplete information is supplied and the blocked communication channel is dredged by capturing enough information from the external surroundings, then the normal regulating and controlling functions of the HBS are recovered and the diseases are dispelled gradually. The principles of curing diseases by weiqi can be explained in the same way.
In this paper an information system model about detecting diseases by qigong is derived out, based on the recognition that the process of information movement when a qigong master detects diseases is very analogous to that when a radar works. The general principles of detecting diseases by qigong are as follows. The qigong master modulates his inner qi through his activities of consciousness and makes it a flow of weiqi having enough energy and being transmissible, then sends out the flow of weiqi from his palm or from his tianmu (an acupoint) and makes it travel through the sending-out communication channel to the focus of the patient. At this time, one part of the weiqi is absorbed by the morbid organ of the patient; the other part of the weiqi is 'reflected' i.e., modulated by the morbid organ and changed into a flow of weiqi carrying the patient's morbid information) and retrieved through the retrieving communication channel to the qigong master's palm or furthermore led into the internal organs of the internal organs of the qigong master. The retrieved weiqi will react on the palm or internal organs and the reaction results will be transmitted through the nervous system into the brain of the qigong master. Then the qigong master can obtain the information about the states of the patient's disease, such as the exact position of the focus and the degree of seriousness of the disease. Nevertheless, the results of detecting diseases by qigong may have some distortion, because both the sending-out communication channels and the retrieving communication channel are noisy communication channel which will reduce the reliability and efficiency of transmission of the weiqi. Based on the similar analysis, an information system model about curing diseases by qigong can also be derived out.
