Qigong treatment for hypertension caused by renal insufficiency

A qigong treatment was conducted on 32 hospitalized patients with hypertension caused by renal insufficiency. Each patient received sequentially three different treatment, viz, simple sitting, waiqi (emitted qi of qigong) and imitated waiqi (the qi deliverer is a mock-qigong master).

The waiqi or the imitated waiqi was delivered to certain acupoints: paihui, yongchuan, tsusanli,, tachui, chuchih, keshu and the patients were asked to sit according to the qigong requirement. Blood pressures of all the subjects before and after the treatments were recorded and the results were analyzed by self-control. It was found that the systolic and diastolic pressures decreased significantly, averaging 19.2mm Hg and 7.9mm Hg respectively, after the treatment of waiqi, 4.4mm Hg and 1.3mm Hg after the treatment of imitated waiqi (P<0.01). There were also significant differences between these three treatments. However, no significant changes of the blood pressure were found after the simple sitting treatment (P<0.05). The above results indicate that qigong had curative effects on hypertension caused by renal insufficiency, and waiqi is more effective. This experiment opens up a hopeful prospect to the treatment of this disease.
