We measured the Cupro-Zino Superoxide Dismutase (Cu-Zn SOD) activity in the red blood cells (RBC) in 229 patients with cancer by color immunological plate reacted to the enzyme. The method has many advantages, such as simplicity, rapidity, microelement, convenience and so on. The blood specimen was taken from the finger of the patient rather than vein vessel. A drop of blood is quite enough for the examination and it has no need to keep stomach empty.
We found that there is significant difference between the cancer patients who practiced qigong and those who did not. The average value of Cu-Zn SOD activity in RBC is 399.68+-48.2ug/gHb in 124 qigong practitioners with cancer, and is 356.78+-22.3ug/gHb in the patients who did not practise qigong, the former is much higher than that in the latter (P<0.001). The result showed that patients with cancer could benefit from daily practising qigong. Measuring Cu-Zn SOD activity by the method can not only offer an useful way to observe the effect of clinical treatment of cancer, but also help judge the prognosis of cancer, so it is necessary to investigate the relationship between the activity of Cu-Zn SOD in RBC and the occurrence and development of cancer.
