In recent years, the Japanese health insurance system has been approaching its limit and there have been many changes in society structures and disease structures so that, the big bang has already started in dental medical care and some dynamic changes have been occurring. What has been asked for a shift from cure to prevention and furthermore to dentistry for happiness; dental medical care offering 'amenities'; attachment of importance on the relationship with the whole body; and treatment in view of the patient's whole body based on natural views via Oriental thoughts. For these purposes, it is essential that integrative medicine be practiced, and application of CAM has been the key means of achieving it. In order to realize integrative medicine, information regarding CAM should be between medical personnel and patients and patients' knowledge of medical care should be raised. In addition, Other important points include economic evaluation through analysis of the cost-effectiveness of CAM in practical medical care fields; making an appropriate health insurance system; realization of mixed treatments (of insured and uninsured treatments); and introduction of private sector vitality. Consciousness-raising that the medical care system is inherently for the patients' sakes is called for. The time has come to hold realistic discussions taking the above matters into account.
