Analysis of Psychosocial Factors of the Mental Disorder Caused by Qigong

Objective: To analyse the psychosocial factors of the mental disorder caused by Qigong.
Methods: This study retrospectively investigated 105 patients with the mental disorder caused by Qigong (conformed to the criterion of CCMD-2-R, case group), and compared with 54 Qigong exercisers (control group).
Qigong group included 42 males and 63 females from inpatients, 17~65 years old, with the average ages 40.01±13.47. Control group included 20 males and 34 females partially randomly, 20~68 years old, with the average ages 43.83±10.72.
Results: 97 percent of the patients and 98 percent of the exercisers believe that Qigong has magical effects. The character of the patients is mainly introversion (58%), but extroversion character is a majority in the control (37%). Chi square test: the value was 10.96 (p<0.01).The exercise times and duration of the patients are more than those of the controls. (0.05<p<0.01)
Conclusion: The mental disorder caused by Qigong occurred largely in the population affected by Qigong culture, its development may be correlated with the incorrect methods and mental status of Qigong exercise, and the defective personality.
