Research on Psychotic Disorders Caused by Qigong in 21 Cases

Objective: To analyze clinical characteristics of psychotic disorder caused by Qigong
Methods: The study was carried out in 21 subjects (4 male and 17 female, between 19-54 years old), who were diagnosed as having psychotic disorders caused by Qigong according to CCMD-ER.. All subjects learned Qigong by themselves. Mental symptoms were recorded in all subjects. BPRS was adopted to evaluate the patient present condition. Small dosages of antipsychotic drugs were administered after the conclusion of Qigong. They were followed up for two years and clinical test MMPI was applied to evaluate personality.
Results: 9 cases showed symptoms of schizophrenia; 7 cases showed symptoms of hysteria; 5 cases showed symptoms of neurosis. The total score of BPRS is 41.67±7.62; score of anxiety and depression is 2.48±0.76; score of blunted affect is 2.52±0.48; score of motor hyperactivity is 2.39±0.78; score of thought disturbance is 2.76±0.47; score of hostility and suspiciousness is 2.92±1.21. After using antipsychotic drugs, 18 cases were cured, mental symptoms of 3 patients disappeared after 2-3 days. The length of hospitalization is less than 90 days in 10 cases. In MIMP test, 7 cases showed symptoms of schizophrenia, the Pa score was 15.26±3.87 (P<0.05), Sc score was 27.82±6.21 (P<0.005); 12 cases showed symptoms of hysteria, and HS was 11.23±3.5 (P<0.05), D was 28.62±5.2 (P<0.05).
Conclusion: Different psychological features show different mental symptoms. Average level of education was low. Antipsychotic drugs and psychotherapy have curative effect to psychotic disorders caused by Qigong.
