Objective: To try to evaluate the curative effects of qigong (Hexiangzhuang) in treating hyperglycemia.
Methods: The study included 20 subjects (11 males and 9 females) with the average age of 52.7 years old. 20 subjects were all selected from inpatients who suffered from diabetes without serious complications like cardiovascular or cerebrovascular diseases. Diagnose criterion: Temporary National Diagnose Criterion for Diabetes (established in Oct. 1979). Low sugar diet with 300~350g staple food per day had been provided to the 20 subjects since their admission. 7 days after admission, blood glucose and lipid test, glucose tolerance test were taken in comparison with the results taken at the end of the study. Then under the direction of qigong master, the subjects started to dirigate Hexiangzhuang, a kind of traditional Chinese qigong, twice a day. In the 2~3 months’ course, measurement were taken every 2 or 4 weeks.
Results: Blood glucose (fast and 2h) and lipid test results taken after the dirigation declined significantly when compared with the results taken before dirigation(p<0.01).The results of glucose tolerance test significantly went up compared with the results before dirigation.
Conclusion: The dirigation of qigong has beneficial effects in the treatment of diabetes, and it maybe because that the dirigation can increase the sugar utilization of cells.
