Objective: To investigate the effect of internal nourishing Qigong in treating diabetes.
Methods: The study was carried out in 52 cases with whole data. All subjects came from the inpatients from 1981-1993, who received internal nourishing Qigong treatment and were followed over 2 years. 52 subjects included 12 males and 40 females with the average age 57.9 years old, ranged between 38 and 72. 32 subjects had complications. The average course was 8.5 years, ranged from half year to 20 years.
The subjects were asked to practice internal nourishing Qigong 3-5 times per day, 40-60 minutes every time, two month as one course of treatment, assisted with medication at the beginning and food control.
Internal Nourishing Qigong was from the book of The Practice of Qigong Treatment, written by Liu Guizhen. If power permission, the subjects were also asked to have certain sports such as Tai chi.
The dose should reduce step by step till zero.
Results: 16 cases (30.8%) were clinical recovery .( without any symptom by food control only, whose blood sugar was under 110mg%, 2-hour postprandial blood sugar was under 130mg%; or glucose tolerance test was negative and 24-hour urine sugar was under 5 grams.) 28 cases (53.8%) show significant improvement (without symptom by food control and certain medication, whose blood sugar was under 150mg%, 2-hour postprandial blood sugar was under 180mg%, 24-hour urine sugar was under 15 grams) 8 cases (15.4%) show some improvement. (with symptoms in control by food control and certain medication).
The blood sugar was normal in 22 cases, while urine sugar 28 cases. 3 cases had no changes in blood sugar, while 1 cases in urine sugar. The blood sugar and the urine sugar of the rest cases got improvement.
Their symptoms were also ameliorated a lot.
Conclusion: It is good method for the treatment of diabetes practicing internal nourishing Qigong. If possible, qigong practice matched with sports practice would be better.
