Describes 2 therapeutic methods based on traditional Chinese medicine: taiji quan ('shadow boxing') and qigong ('breathing exercises'). Basic assumptions of traditional Chinese medicine are reviewed, with an emphasis on the correspondence between particular emotions and organs. The effectiveness of taiji quan and qigong in the treatment of psychosomatic disorders is discussed and illustrated with 2 case examples.
