Studied personality features of patients with Qigong-induced mental disorders (MDs) and the causation. 35 Qigong masters (aged 24-68 yrs) from the Nanjing Qigong Association and 28 patients with Qigong -induced MDs (aged 19-65 yrs) from the Najing Brain Diseases Hospital in China were assessed with the MMPI, the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ), and the self-designed Qigong-Induced Mental Disorder Related Factor Investigation Scale. 42 of 57 inpatients with Qigong -induced MDs discharged from the hospital between 1984 and 1997 were followed for 8-13 yrs. Ss' scores of the MMPI were compared with the Chinese norms. Ss' gender, education levels, family history, MMPI and EPQ scores, attitudes toward Qigong, time, ways, environment, and feelings towards Qigong exercises were studied between Qigong master Ss and Qigong -induced MDs patient Ss with factor analysis and logistic regression analysis. The results showed that (1) the scores of hysteria of the MMPI of both Qigong master and Qigong-induced MDs patient Ss were higher than the Chinese norm; (2) the MMPI features of Qigong-induced MDs patient Ss matched the diagnostic syndrome; (3) Qigong -induced MDs were associated with the scores of hypochondriasis and schizophrenia of the MMPI and the scores of neurosis of the EPQ; (4) The diagnoses of 35 of 42 MDs inpatient Ss in the follow-up changed. The results indicate that abnormality of personality and inappropriate Qigong exercises cause MDs.
