External-qi treatment is a method for treating diseases by the external-qi sent out by Qigong masters. The external-qi can act on the patient and can simulate the meridians and collateral, mobilize the physiological functions Or the patient. As a result, it can treat diseases and build up the body. This method is widely welcome because it is painless, without medication and injection, and easy to be accepted by the patient. Generally, it not only can treat the main complaint, but also can get away the complications.

But external-qi treatment is not a cure-all. No matter with what kind of external-qi, so long as the patient can get a sensation of tinging, numbness, coolness, hotness, heaviness or a sensation like a electric shock, the treatment effect will be obtained. This kind of sensation is called 'Deqi', or 'the arrival of Qi'. Clinically, I have applied external-qi for treating diseases in hundreds of cases. I sincerely think that 'the crux of acupuncture is the arrival of Qi. If Qi arrives, satisfied effect will follow' (Lingshu, Chapter 1). This theory is also of great significance in the treatment of diseases by external-qi. Now I just provide you three typical cases to prove my viewpoint.

1. 'The Quick Arrival of Qi leads to Quick Curative Effects???
case one
Mr.lou, male, 47 of age, a technician. Ten years ago, he fell down and injured his right hand. From them then on, he was not able to reach his nose and face, or lift heavy things with his right hand. When weather changes or he did too much work, the hand would become very painful. He had tried western medicine, massage and acupuncture treatment, the result was not satisfactory. On Sept..7 1986, a you time period (5-7 p.m.), I performed Qigong treatment on him. I sent out external-Qi to his bilateral Hegu (Li 4) points for 5 minutes. The patient told me that during the treatment, a feverish and numb sensation like air current propagated along the lateral anterior aspect of the arm to the shoulder, the neck and then to the whole body. This sensation was appeared on both arms. The patient felt hot, and a numb and cool current circulated in the body. Afterwards, the patient felt relaxed and very comfortable. The symptoms of the right hand disappeared immediately and he could lift up the object of 20 kilos. One year later, there was no relapse.

2. 'Slow arrival of Qi leads to a slew effect'
Case two
Mr.wang Zhen, male age 48, associate professor. He felt down from the upper bunk on the train in Nov.1987 when he was on business. His waist was injured and he Couldn't move at that time. Under I-ray, the bones were fine, only the injury of soft tissue and meridians. He was carried home by four people. On Dec. 9 of the same year, he was treated by external-qi with a cool, numb and Cot sensations over the body Immediately after the treatment, he could walk again. After another four treatment, he was cured.

3. There will be effect if Qi dose not arrive'
Case three
Mr.Li Houji, male! 56 years old, professor of Tianjin Teacher's University. This patient had right side hemiplegia. Teacher's university. He accepted external-qi treatment at noon, Jan.12,1987. The treatment lasted 20 minutes, and no effect was obtained.
'Deqi' is a term from traditional Chinese medicine. It has two implications:- One is needling sensation, and the other is that after acupuncture, evil-qi was expelled, the disease was alleviated. Lingshu, Chapter one says' the crux of acupuncture is the arrival of qi. If qi arrives, satisfied effect will follow. The effect appears as if the clouds is blown away and then the sky can be seen.' Ode of Golden Needle (Jinzhenfu) sated: 'Quick Deqi leads to quick effect ,' and slow Deqi leads to slow effect'. All these proved that the arrival of Qi is very important in the treatment. 'Deqi' in external-qi treatment is similar to needing sensation. Although they are two different methods, the treatment mechanism is the same.
TCM holds that Qi is a subtle and essential substance with strongly active nature for maintaining peoples lives. Qi exists objectively and it has special characteristic manifestations... For instance, if 'Deqi' appears in animals, they will become active, and high in spirits. Their hair is snowwhite, clean and lustrous, and feels soft and smooth. The animals look very healthy. All this reactions are not seen in the control
group. After long term external-qi, the food-intake of domestic
rabbits decreased when compared with the control group, but their
body weight still gained the same amount as the control group.... this told us that external-qi is a substance, and it has special actions.
I think that there is a close relationship between 'Deqi??? and the effect of external-qi treatment. No matter the Qigong master touch or not touch the point of the patient, curative effect will be good ii 'Deqi' appears in the patient. Usually, quick arrival of Qi leads to slow effect, and no 'Deqi' leads to no effect. Therefore, we should pay attention to the arrival of Qi during the treatment. If Qi does not appear in the patient,
the master should try to arouse patients' potential and make Qi arrive, otherwise the work will be fruitless. the curative effect Of external-qi treatment is 'Deqi'. That means that 'Deqi' is very important in gaining the curative effect. This is just my rough ideas, if the friends of the same line have any other opinions, kindly give me your advice.
