Pigu (practicing qigong without eating) and saccharide metabolism Author: Cao Long Affiliation: Jilin Railway Center Hospital, Jilin, China [1] Conference/Journal: 3rd Nat Acad Conf on Qigong Science Date published: 1990 Other: Pages: 15 , Word Count: 290 Qigong pigu has existed since ancient times. At present, scientific research workers are engaged in large-scale study of qigong pigu mechanism. Available data has fully proved that qigong pigu is scientific and feasible. This article expounds the probable mechanism of qigong pigu in personal practice. Objective criteria have been closely observed as much as possible and the findings are also supported by theoretical biochemistry. This article briefly describes the importance of normal energy supplies such as saccharide, fat and protein to the human body. The observations of changes in body weight, abdominal circumference. B. U. N. and blood sugar combined with the personal practical experience of author in practicing pigu are utilized in this article to explain the probable means of regulation of saccharide metabolism in the body, the means of retrogression of fat and protein in the body, and the means of maintaining normal blood sugar during saccharide retrogression. During the 12-day pigu treatment, body weight undergoes slight changes and declines from 86 Kg to 79.5 Kg; B. U. N. tends to rise from 5.5 mmol/L to a maximum of 8.6 mmol/L. Abdominal circumference tends to decrease slowly, falling gradually from 95 cm until it stabilized at 87 cm. Blood sugar is progressively reduced from 5.9 mmol/L to a stable 3.9 mmol/L and the glycopenia standard fluctuates here. Through practice the author suggests: the energy storehouse of the human body is in the form of protein and fat has good accommodation system in the human body; as the energy storehouse stores up the energy, noxious substances also store up; as the energy storehouse release the energy, noxious substances release also; the energy of the energy storehouse is limited. So we can consider the qigong pigu is scientific and favorable for the human body.
