Follow-up of psychotic disorders caused by Qigong in 29 cases

    Objective: To study the outcomes of psychotic disorders caused by Qigong
Methods: The study was carried out in 29 subjects, 15 females and 14 males, ranging in ages 20-60 years old. All subjects had been diagnosed as having psychotic disorders caused by Qigong according to the diagnostic criteria of CCMD-2. 20 subjects exercised Qigong to cure the disease; 2 subjects aimed to promote health, and 7 subjects’ motivations were unclear. 23 subjects learned by themselves and 6 subjects were guided by Qigong masters. 22 cases showed symptoms of schizophrenia, 4 cases showed symptoms of neurosis, 3 cases showed symptoms of emotional disorders. Antipsychotic agents were applied to treat the psychotic disorders. The length of stay lasted 8 days to 3 months for hospitalization. The subjects were rediagnosed according to the criteria of CCMD-2-R in 2-6 years follow-up.
Results: 14 subjects continued taking antipsychotic drugs for at least half a year. 10 subjects were not in stable state, of which 8 subjects were rehospitalized because of changed diagnosis. 
Conclusion: Psychotic disorders caused by Qigong can be treated as an independent unit.
